The Lancashire Hussars and their horses outside Southport Town Hall.

The Lancashire Hussar's had a long illustrious history and part of that heritage involved visiting Southport almost every year form 1858 to train on the sand and promenade. Lord Gerard the Lieutenant Colonel convinced Edward VII to visit Southport 1898 to see the regiment training. Following the Boer War the regiment was awarded the South African Medals at a ceremony in 1902 at Southport Town Hall, and this last event ended the Town's connection.
