| Comments | Woodlands was situated on the corner of Albert Road and North Street where the present Southport Police Station is situated. Built in 1828 and owned by a prominent magistrate Ralph Peter’s and named View Lodge. In 1854 it was renamed Sea View House and was owned by John Hargreaves with extensive grounds the property was eventually listed on 1 Manchester Road. The property was renamed Woodlands by another owner Letitia Knowles between 1860-66. The house was empty for several years until 1915 when it was commandeered by the military and used as a convalescent hospital with at least 12 huts added to the grounds to accommodate the casualties. Woodlands was the St John Hospital in Southport and with the Grange in Roe Lane offered accommodation and care for 500 patients. In 1920 it became Southport Municipal Secondary School for Boys and eventually renamed The Woodlands County Borough of Southport Technical School but this was short lived. Southport Corporation purchased 67 acres of land in Scarisbrick New Road and King George V School opened in 1926 all students moved the new site. Today the Police and Fire Station sit on the original site. |
