Comments
On the 9th of December 1886 two lifeboats were launched, the Eliza Fernley from Southport and the Laura Janet from St Anne's in an attempt to rescue the stricken crew aboard the German vessel the Mexico Barque. Disaster struck, the rough seas capsized the Eliza Fernley and only 2 of the 16 crew survived, and all crew of the Laura Janet were lost at sea. Memorials were erected in Southport and St Anne's to honour the bravery of both crews and commemorate this terrible tragedy.
