In 1848 William Rockliffe was appointed Coxswain of the lifeboat “Rescue” and continued his service with the "Jessie Knowles" from 1861 to 1873. After saving the crew of the Tamworth a Norwegian Barque bound for Liverpool in 1863, he was awarded the Silver Cross by the King of Sweden and Norway with a sum of £2 awarded to each of the lifeboatmen. Captain Rockliffe continued his command until his death in 1873, aged 69, he had assisted at least 367 people.
