Comments
The Liverpool Overhead Railway opened in 1893 and was know locally as the dockers umbrella, as it protected anyone who walked underneath it from the weather. The railway suffered bomb damage during WW2 but was essential in transporting dock workers along the line. Often marketed as a tourist attraction for visitors to see the River Mersey. The railway suffered much structural damage during its long life and a report highlighting costs to repair in the 1950s was untenable for the Liverpool Overhead Railway Company, and on the 30th December 1956 after more than 60 years service it closed.
