The Roman Catholic Church of St Monica Bootle received Grade one listing on the 29/11/2017 and was designed by Francis Xavier Velarde and is considered a masterpiece. Born in England he studied and taught at the Liverpool School of Architecture. Historic England state “The building's bold Modernist design, influenced by Velarde's own spirituality, is unlike anything seen in English church design in the mid-1930s and was inspired by the work of the German Brick Expressionist architect Dominikus Bohm.” The three exceptional sculptures of angels with their heads bowed can be seen on the West Tower and are designed by the distinguished sculptor Herbert Tyson.
