The Manchester and Southport Railway merged with the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway in 1854 and on April 7th 1855 the Manchester to Southport line opened with the terminus in Chapel Street. The railway opened to the public on Easter Monday and the company described the line as the most direct line to the most delightful Sea-Bathing and most salubrious of all Watering Places. During Whit-Week which ended on June 2nd there had been 19,235 visitors.
