Author Silas Hocking was born in Cornwall and was most famous for his book “Her Benny” which told the story of street children in Liverpool. It was the first book to sell over one million copies and made him one of the most popular authors in Victorian England. In 1870 he was ordained a Methodist Minister in Manchester and moved to Southport in 1883, he was a preacher and popular minister at the Duke Street Methodist Church from 1883-1896. Later in life he was involved with the Liberal Party and politics.
