The Rev. Charles Hesketh donated the land for the future Hesketh Park with a proviso and the Improvement Commissioners gratefully accepted. The conditions stated that the park would be surrounded with an iron palisade and four entrance gates, ornamental features mounds, trees, shrubs, and a walkway and to keep the park in good order. The opening ceremony took place on May 1st, 1868, by the first Mayor of Southport Dr Peter Wood and was designed by Edward Kemp.
